RE: Recommended Park in Moab

We like canyonlands. It is gravel and shaded. I do not think there is one that can grow grass....
Yes Sept. is still warm in Moab, so you may want shade. KOA and arches are on oposite ends of town, and both very windy at times.
the ones close to the river can really get you with the mosquitos.
Stayed in slickrock once, and it is all red sand, but also has shade.
Arches is only a few miles north.
You also have island in the sky, and needles. Monment valley is close eneough for a big day trip. you can spend a lot of time in this area....

RE: Poulsbo RV in Ridgefield, WA?

We had issues there as well, and went elsewhere to buy.
There are dealers in mcminville, and albany oregon. Try those. You do not have to do the waranty at the selling dealer.
Give you a chance to find a better dealer?

RE: Purchasing offer

When we got ours, we found 2-3 we really liked. Found out what they were really going for, cut a little off of that, (got finance at the bank before hand) and made offers. took 2 weeks for one to get back to us, but that is what we own now. The other 2 dealers also got back to us a little later. All were willing to make the deal.
Be fair, you want a deal, they deserve a profit. compare the same model/options at differant dealers. Sometimes there is a huge differance in asking price in the same town.

RE: good year trailer tires.

We had our first flat on a goodyear marathon, tires are 4 years old. And I tow at 65-70.
Was sold a Triagle brand tire. Looks the same, but have not found any info.
I would buy the Good year again.

RE: Expedition or Durango?

We went through this same question a couple of years ago.
We went with the ford, We have a family of 6. And the Ford in 2003 dropped the rear seat floor so it was not high like the old supercabs were, leaving your knees in your chin. Dodge did not(at that time). Also the rear seat on the Dodge was not comfortable at all, and difficult to get into for me. All of the seats fold flat in both. But the little extra in the ford allows me to get some good sized items in it and keep them out of the rain when needed.
We felt both were good rigs.
Those are the reasons we went with Ford.

RE: real MPG savings?

That is why I am asking, I expected a larger differance. I know this was from WA state, to SE Utah, through all of the differant terrain. I thought that may be the reason the numbers are so close. Random choice, no plan.
this is the longest towing trip I take.
Weekend trips are usually 100 miles ea. direction. Other than that the truck spends it's time at home.
And I tow on the freeway with the Cruise control on.
I am looking at saving money, that is why I was supprised at so little differance. And I always wave with all my fingers.... well almost always..
thanks

real MPG savings?

We just got back from a 2000+ mile trip.
I did not see a lot of difference in towing our TT at 70 (10.3MPG) and 55 (10.9MPG) what are the real life experiances of those doing a lot of towing of TT and 5er's.
thanks

RE: exit window latch

we checked the rv repair place. He had nothing and could not order it. we are at canyonlands CG as well. Woodland is nice, we are from that area.
We will call a few dealers on our route, and see if we can find anything, or get it shipped to us.
thanks

exit window latch

Where do I get a new latch for the exit window? it is the type that has the metal bar that pulls in and turns to the side.
I should not have to change the window?
I am staying the rest of the week in Moab UT. And would like to fix it before I leave.
thanks,

RE: accident

I agree with the anti-anti-sway friction bar comments above.
In fact, tightening the control was the wrong thing to do. The control should have been loosened instead. See #4 below.
BTW, although we think we can multi-task, like listen to music and drive and converse with passengers, the reality is that all of this requires some amount of concentration. As I get older, I realize that I am slightly slower to recognize problems ahead if the music is on; in adverse conditions I try to shut down all distractions so my attention is on the road. Really not much different than cell phone use except in magnitude.
QUOTE FROM THE REESE PDF FOR FRICTION SWAY CONTROL:
1.SWAY CONTROL CANNOT BE USED ON TRAILERS WITH SURGE BRAKES.
2.Trailer loading: Proper trailer loading is your first-line defense against dangerous instability and sway. Heavy items should be placed on the floor in front of the axle. The load should be balanced side-to-side and secured to prevent shifting. Tongue weight should be about 10-15 percent of gross trailer weight for most trailers. Too low apercentage of tongue weight can cause sway. Load the trailer heavier in front.
3. The handle (5) is an on/off device. The bolt (7) below is for adjustment only.
4. When towing during slippery conditions such as wet, icy, or snow-covered roads or on loose gravel, turn on/off handle (5) counterclockwise until all tension is removed from unit. Failure to do so could prevent tow vehicle and trailer from turning properly.
5. Do not speed up if sway occurs. Sway increases with speed. Do not continue to operate a swaying vehicle. Check trailer loading, sway control adjustment, and all other equipment, until the cause of sway has been determined and corrected.
6. Never paint or lubricate slide bar (6).
END QUOTE
PS Thanks for posting your experience here so we could discuss it and learn from it. Too many folks are embarrassed, don't post and 'Lessons Learned' are lost...
Also #5 here bears some attention. If things are not right, (sway, bounce, pull, breaking....) get it repaired before continuing.
I am glad that you are ok. I run a friction control also, and have learned from your willingness to share.
thank you

RE: Best route towing through the Rocky Mountains...

I would take 15 to 80. And leave SLC in the early morning to do the major pulling while it is cool outside.
I would also spend a few bucks and add a trans cooler if your jeep is an automatic.

RE: Perfect Portable Charcoal Grill??

http://www.aussiegrills.com/products_walkabout.php
this is the one we bought this year. We will see how it goes. So far so good. And there is a pan the charcoal goes in so we can dimp the ashes easy. It controls the heat ok. I like that it latches closed, and so far stays clean. Got it at Lowes.

RE: buying ettiquette

I would walk away, and let your mind wrap this for a week or two, and they may move some in that time.
they also make $$ on the financing, I would go to a Credit Union, and get prequalified. To the dealer this makes it a cash deal and the numbers easier to follow. Now you also know the max you are willing to pay from someone who is not out to sell you an RV.
then find the real value of your TT from ads in the area and see what they may be selling for. Take that from the value you owe on it. this is the negative that will have to be caried on the new unit.
Find the new one take 3-4 dealers prices on the same unit, average it out. Deduct 20-25% add in the "negative" from the first TT and that should put you in the low ball park of their cost. a a couple of K for them to make a profit, make an offer and walk away. Took the dealer 2 weeks to call me back. Got my TT for what I was willing to pay, and was a fair price to them.
Also keep the time on your loan short if possible. That is another area that people get upside down fast. The loan is too long so the principle never goes down before you want out. My CU guy said 8 yrs max.

RE: fuel mileage

I would ask what else you use the truck for? and how long will you keep it?
Those are questions that will make a differance also.
I have a diesel. And with my TT If I keep it around 60mph I get 12-13 towing, and about 14-16 empty. I would never tow with a 1/2 ton truck. I like the extra power of the diesel when needed, like pulling grades, or fighting headwinds.
I pulled from S. Utah to WA. state and the truck had all the power it needed to keep 60.
But my truck also sits at home unless towing, or out for a weekly drive to keep it in good running order. And I kept my last truck (1990) till it fell apart. So I hope this is close to the last truck I buy, so the extra cost was worth it to me.

RE: HELP.Ford 350, Chevy 2500HD or Dodge to tow, Need opinions

I upgraded from a 90 f-350cc dually LB to a 04 f350cc SB. I do miss the dually, pulling my TT. The 04 I have has tow command that actually holds the truck real well going down hills.
I would look and decide what you like, then get the VIN# and go to a service dept. at the dealer and ask for a vehicle report. Ford calls it "oasis" and that will tell you all the repairs that have been done to the truck. Also the 6.0 is under a 5yr/100K mile warranty, even if you did not buy the truck new.
The 6.0 seems to be good or bad. If no repeat or unusual reairs they seem solid. If a lot of repairs, find another one.(not bashing, I own and love mine)
And being out west, if you do a lot of off road travel, get the 4X4. These trucks are front heavy empty
